Adkins was brought up by a single mother in various working-class communities of London. She loved to sing popular music of the present as a child , and was adept at playing the guitar and clarinet. It wasn't until her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a rhythm and blues singer, as well as other performers in the late 20th century and she began to consider about a profession in music. She was attending an elementary school for visual and performing arts, which was funded by the federal government. A friend of mine posted songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. Her music soon caught the attention of recording companies and, in 2006, shortly after her graduation she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
